, finely situated in a loop of the broad rakhthos River as it meanders towards the
Amvrakiks Gulf
, 20km to the south. It is one of the more pleasant Greek-mainland towns: a quiet place, very much the provincial capital, with an old centre that retains much of its Ottoman-bazaar aspect (including a covered market on Pyrrou), and some celebrated medieval monuments.
