DHESSA
, like Vria, is a delightful place for a stopover but with rather better accommodation; its modest fame is attributed to the waters that flow through the town. Descending from the mountains to the north, these waters flow swiftly through the middle of town in several courses and then, just to the east, cascade down a dramatic ravine, luxuriant with vegetation, to the plain below. Most of the town's architecture is humdrum, but the various streamside parks and wide pedestrian pavements are a rare pleasure in a country where the car is tyrant - indeed, dhessa was the pioneering town in Greece for pedestrianization.
