Some 10km
southwest of Dei
along the C710, the ancient and intriguing hill town of
VALLDEMOSSA
is actually best approached from the south, where, after squeezing through a narrow, wooded defile, the road from Palma enters a lovely valley, whose tiered and terraced fields ascend to the town, a sloping jumble of rusticated houses and monastic buildings backclothed by the mountains. The origins of Valldemossa date to the early fourteenth century, when the asthmatic King Sancho built a royal palace here in the hills where the air was easier to breathe.
