Extract from the United States Travel Guides:
For five centuries, travelers have brought their hopes and dreams to America. For the earliest pioneers, it was a virgin wilderness ready to be shaped into a "New World," a potential paradise wasted on its native peoples. Millions of immigrants followed, to share in the building of the new nation and to better their lives, far from the hidebound societies of Europe and Asia. Eventually, slaves, who had been shipped over from Africa and the Caribbean, joined them as free citizens. As the United States expanded to fill the continent, something genuinely new was created: a vast country that took pride in defining itself in the eyes of the world.read the whole United States Travel Guides...

| Events : State fairs |
|
| IF you are travelling in and around USA look out for the state fairs held in most of the states. Very popular in the US. There are lots of typically American things such as competitions, demolition derbies and a Ferris wheel. In 2001 Bob Dylan apparently appeared on stage at the Illinois State Fair. |

| Dangers : Beware the stop signs! |
|
| It seems that at every junction there is a stop sign and there is no conception of 'right of way'. This slows traffic and can be very dangerous if you're not used to it! |

| Getting Around : Return trips |
|
| In North America the term for a return ticket is a 'round trip'. Sounds pretty obvious but they have no concept of return trips and you will end up with a single and get fined on the return leg for not having the appropriate ticket! |

| Work : Lottery |
|
| A lottery exists which every year allocates a certain number of green cards based on a random draw. To see if you are eligible you could look @ http://lottery2usa.com/newsletter1.html. It's a good site except it does have the rather ridiculous and quite offensive statement 'The USA has the only Immigration policy in the World that is blind to race, religion, creed and colour'. I pointed this out to them and they were very polite but didn't get the point. |
