Five miles southwest of Bective Abbey,
TRIM

, "Town of the ford of the elder tree"), marks the final architectural masterpiece (a medieval one this time) along the banks of the River Boyne. The town can boast the remains of the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, ruins of various abbeys and a host of other medieval remains. Yet it remains surprisingly little visited and somewhat downbeat in atmosphere. Nonetheless, it's worth stopping here, with plenty to see in and around the town.
