to be the "Brazilian Tyrol" is by no means a baseless one. In 1933, 82 Tyroleans led by Andreas Thaler, a former Austrian minister of agriculture, arrived in what is now Treze Tlias. As the dense forest around the settlement was gradually cleared more settlers joined the colony, but after Germany's annexation of Austria in 1938 immigration came to an end - as did funds to help support the pioneers during the difficult first years...
