The modern town of
THVA
lies 20km north of Eleutherai, built right on the site of its mighty predecessor. For this very reason, there are almost no traces of the past: archeologists have had little success in excavating the crucial central areas, and the most interesting visit is to the excellent
archeological museum
(summer Mon noon-7pm, Tues-Sun 8am-7pm; winter may close earlier; ?1.50). This is to be found at the north (downhill) end of Pindhrou, the main street; look out for the enormous Frankish tower in its forecourt, where archeologists can often be seen at work in their labs.
