TALARA
, some 70km further north from Sullana, would be more attractive if it wasn't for the entrance to the city being strewn with rubbish, a depressing sight of plastic bags impaled on bushes for almost a kilometre. All roads into the town are in a poor state of repair. Until 1940, it was no more than a small fishing hamlet, though its deep-water harbour and tar pits had been used since Pizarro's time for caulking wooden ships - Pizarro had chosen the site for the first Spanish settlement in Peru, but it proved too unhealthy and he was forced to look elsewhere, eventually hitting on Piura.
