A side road, close by the Kstro ts Ores, takes you the 12km to
STMIO
, an unexceptional seaside village near the mouth of the river Pinis. The beach here is a relatively new phenomenon - a 1950s flood changed the river's course, creating a vast sandspit behind the abandoned riverbed. The dense beech trees of ssa march down almost to the shore, masking some of Stmio's more uninspired recent construction; the place is cheerfully downmarket and resolutely Greek working-class, though an influx of EU money has resulted in cosmetic "improvements".
