Extract from the St-Jean-de-Cle Travel Guides: Midway between Villars and Thiviers on the main Prigueux-Angoulme road, ST-JEAN-DE-CLE must rank as one of the loveliest villages in the Dordogne. Its ancient houses huddle together in typical medieval fashion around a wide sandy square dominated on one side by the huge church of St-Jean-Baptiste , built in the eleventh century, and the rugged-looking Chteau de la Marthonie (July & Aug daily 10.15am-noon & 2-7pm; 20F/?3.05) on the other. The chteau, first erected in the fourteenth century, has acquired various additions in a pleasingly organic kind of growth.
