SONGPAN
was founded as a Qing garrison town straddling the Min River, 220km north of Chengdu, and three of its massive stone gateways still stand. From up on top of the North Gate, the town's dark-tiled rooftops look rather gloomy, though over in the northeastern quarter the bright colours of the
mosque
are an exception (Songpan has a substantial Muslim population). It's not a large town, and dogs, chickens and horses roam the kilometre-long main street, which runs down to the
