, with a much-modified Roman bridge, is where Lawrence Durrell spent the last years of his life. The town itself boasts no major sights, though it's well preserved and atmospheric. However, a visit to the
castle of Vieilleville
(April-Nov afternoons; rest of year 2pm-dusk; 30F/4.50), on the hillside 3km above Sommires, should not be missed. Owned by the same family for nearly eight hundred years, the castle is full of exquisite antique furniture.
