was originally chosen as the point where the proposed transcontinental railway was to cross the Red River. Realizing the importance of the railway, the business leaders of Winnipeg - Selkirk's great trade rival - launched a campaign to have the route changed. Their efforts were successful, not least because one of the leading lights of the CPR syndicate, Donald Smith, was a key shareholder in the Hudson's Bay Company, which owned five hundred acres of land around The Forks.
