Midway between Bischofshofen and the Styrian ski resort of Schladming,
RADSTADT
was fortified by the archbishops of Salzburg in the sixteenth century to provide a bulwark against the Turks (who, in fact, never got this far) - partly moated walls punctuated by a series of impressive towers still encompass the town centre. With the Tauern ranged imperiously to the south, it's an undeniably pretty spot, and a popular base for winter sports, but unless you're in this part of Austria to ski it probably merits only a brief stop.
