PYRGOS
has a grim recent history. When the Germans withdrew at the end of World War II, it remained under the control of Greek Nazi collaborators. These negotiated surrender with the Resistance, who were met by gunfire as they entered the town. Full-scale battle erupted and for five days the town burned. Today, though friendly enough, it's simply a large, functional, modern Greek town and proudly hosts the Currant Institute of the Autonomous Currant Organization; if you can avoid an enforced overnight stay, do so.
