At the edge of the Steigerwald, about 20km south of Bamberg, the village of
POMMERSFELDEN
is dominated by
Schloss Weissenstein
(guided tours April-Oct Tues-Sun 9am-4pm; DM7/?3.50), the jewel in the crown of the enormous building programme that Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schnborn funded from the sizeable fortune he assured himself by masterminding the election of Emperor Charles VI in 1711. Dating from around the same time as Germany's other great Baroque palaces such as Nymphenburg, Wrzburg and the Neue Residenz in Bamberg itself, Weissenstein was built by Johann Dientzenhofer in equally ostentatious proportions....
