PELOTAS
, 270km to the south of Porto Alegre, is situated on the left bank of the Canal de So Gonalo which connects the Lagoa dos Patos with the Lagoa Mirim. The town was founded in 1812 as a port for the
charque
(dried meat) producers of the surrounding region; with the introduction of refrigeration in the late nineteenth century, demand for beef increased, and with it Pelotas' importance as a port and commercial centre. However, by the turn of the century, Rio Grande's port, able to take larger ships, had superseded it.
