Seventy kilometres west of Krakw,
OSWIECIM
would in normal circumstances be a nondescript industrial town - a place to send visitors on their way without a moment's thought. The circumstances, however, are anything but normal here. Despite the best efforts of the local authorities to cultivate and develop a new identity, the town is indissolubly linked with the name the Nazi occupiers of Poland gave the place - Auschwitz.
