Extract from the Normanton Travel Guides: Founded on the banks of the Norman River in 1868,
NORMANTON
was the Gulf's main port, connected to the Croydon goldfield by rail and Cloncurry's copper mines by camel train, and today the town has an air of faded splendour. The train still runs once a week to Croydon and also makes day-trips (June-Sept; $25) to a local waterhole for tea and damper. Set in gritty, flat country, Normanton's fortunes declined along with regional mineral deposits, and today there's only a collection of stores and service stations, a
