One of the places that stands out west of Galaxdhi, and indeed the largest settlement on the gulf's north shore, is
NFPAKTOS
, a lively market town and resort which straggles for some distance along a plane-tree-shaded seafront, below its rambling Venetian castle. The planes are nurtured by numerous running springs, which attest to deceptively water-rich mountains just inland. Some two-hours' drive from Dhelf, or an hour by buses and ferry from Ptra, it makes a convenient and attractive stopover, though diversion of the relentlessly heavy traffic through town would enhance its charm.
