NEWTON STEWART
, famous for its salmon and trout fishing, is an unas suming market town on the west bank of the River Cree. Originally known as Fordhouse of Cree, it was renamed in the seventeenth century by the local laird, William Stewart. A hundred years later, the estate was bought by William Douglas (of Castle Douglas fame), who preferred Newton Douglas, though neither the name, nor the cotton and carpet industry he established lasted long.
