Extract from the New Zealand Travel Guides:
New Zealand comes with a reputation as a unique land packed with magnificent, raw
scenery
: craggy coastlines, sweeping beaches, primeval forests, snow-capped alpine mountains, bubbling volcanic pools, fast-flowing rivers and glacier-fed lakes, all beneath a brilliant blue sky. Even
Kiwis
themselves - named after the endearing, if decidedly odd, flightless bird that has become the national emblem - seem to be filled with astonishment at the stupendous vistas of what they like to think of as "Godzone" (God's own country). All of this provides a canvas for boundless
diversions

| To Do And See : Canoeing on the lakes |
|
| When on the South Island try and get on the lakes for some canoeing. Great fun and amazing views. |

| To Stay : Paradise with the Kiwis |
|
| New Zealand is by far one of the most beautfiul countries to be explored. It has so much to offer in such a small space. Jump in a rental car from Auckland & head up to the bay of Islands. Go sledging in Rotarua, Sky Diving & Bungy Jumping in Taupo over an ancient volcano. See Wellington from a boat and then hope on the ferry for the south Island. Don not miss the experience of swimming with Dolphins in Kaikaoura, Cristchurch is a cool stop and Queenstown is the obvious must. Climb a glacier next to mt. cook and don't forget your camera. NZ is saturated with sights, great people and more heart racing thrills than you are going to know what to do with.. My advice do it all, it's cheap down there and ya only live once! |

| Getting Around : rent a car |
|
| NZ is made up of a north and south island, the two combine into a small compact, and absolutely gorgeous country. Renting a car is easy, cheap and the BEST way to see this place. Save going on a bus for a larger country. A car allows you the freedom and the fun of driving on these crazy zig-zagging roads.. just be sure to stay on your side. |

| Getting Around : Buses etc |
|
| Many travellers go for backpacker buses. Hire or buy a car - you will not regret it. Hitchhiking is easy, but generally buses can be expensive (more than hiring a car if sharing the cost). There are quite a few re-locations available around the country, if you keep an eye out and car sharing notices in hostels. |

| General : NZ vs Oz |
|
| I and most others maintain that New Zealand beats the hell out of Australia as a backpacker destination, its smaller, cheaper, more compact, prettier and just better. Well that's my take anyway, but few would disagree that for a developed country it is very cheap and one, if not the most beautiful place on earth. |
