Extract from the New York City Travel Guides: The most beguiling city in the world, New York is an adrenaline-charged, history-laden place that holds immense romantic appeal for visitors. Wandering the streets here, you'll cut between buildings that are icons to the modern age - and whether gazing at the flickering lights of the midtown skyscrapers as you speed across the Queensboro bridge, experiencing the 4am half-life downtown, or just wasting the morning on the Staten Island ferry, you really would have to be made of stone not to be moved by it all. There's no place quite like it.

While the events of September 11, 2001, which demolished the World Trade Center, shook New York to its cor...

To Do And See : The Singing Cowboy
Have you seen the 'Singing Cowboy'? He is a now famous half naked guy in Times Square. Fortunately for him his admiring tourist fans only stay long enough to get their pictures taken with him so they never know he only ever sings the same song over and over again

Getting Around : Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry is still very safe despite the recent accident. It carries over 19 million passengers per year and has a 5 mile run between the St. George Terminal in Staten Island and the Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan. Service is provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Going Out : Yaffa Cafe
In the East Village, from 14th St. to 4th St., east of 5th Avenue look for the Yaffa Cafe. A great meal costs under $10.00 and a gourmet meal, including wine for under $20.00. It is open 24 hours a day. You will not find anything on the menu that is over $10.00 and it is all very good. Healthy and affordable vegetarian dishes are also available.

To Do And See : Closed
Don't expect to climb the Statue of Liberty - it's still closed due to terrorist concerns. You can get off the boat at Liberty Island still but it's probably better just to see it from the boat to Staten Island

For great live jazz, check out the Bottom Line club in downtown Manhatten. Guitarist Mike Stern has a residency there. Also try the legendary Village Vanguard club nearby.

Going Out : best bars
For the best bars in Manhattan go to the Lower East side. They are still much further away from each other than in other major cities though.

Getting Around : Free trip past the Statue of Liberty
Rather than paying for a trip around the harbour take the ferry to Staten Island for free which goes past the Statue of Liberty anyway.

General : Hype
The 'hype' about the Bronx being a dangerous place is VERY uninformed now-adays. Sure, there was a time when it was dangerous and ugly- with the same dangers and ugliness that poverty brings to any part of the world. There was always an imaginary line between the 'South Bronx' and the 'North Bronx'- the 'south' being very BAD and the the 'north' being OK. Well interestingly the South Bronx seemed to march steadily northward during the 1970's and early 80's from 149th Street, to 161st Street, to Fordham Road. I have lived here since 1968. I have seen and lived in the worst of neighborhoods imaginable. But I have also served on many community boards and not-for-profit groups involved in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Bronx- and guess what??? It happened!! The Bronx is alive and well- new construction, rehabilitated housing- frankly, most tourists could hardly afford to live here. Bronx Supreme Court Building- 161 St. and Grand Concourse (the scene of that stupid movie 'Bonfire of the Vanities'- the book was much better).

Getting Around : Traffic
Much of Manhattan is one way. To figure out which way the traffic goes: even streets go East, odds go West.

To Do And See : Empire State Building
This is a must. Compared with other observatory towers such as the KL Towers (Malaysia) or the Sydney Tower lookouts (which are both good) this one is the best as you are not behind glass screens. A great view on a clear day. Get the 'City Pass' which works out much cheaper and you get 7 passes in total for other attractions such as the Statue Of Liberty tour and various museums etc..

To Do And See : Guggenheim
Leave your common sense at the door when you visit this modern art museum. Perhaps a grand piano partially filled with what looks like cement resting on a pile of potatoes is art? Perhaps the emperor is stark naked? Don't take children as nudity and obscenity attempt to compensate for the lack for intelligent art.
