NEW ABBEY
is a tidy little one-street village, eight miles south of Dumfries, that originally evolved in order to service its giant neighbour,
Sweetheart Abbey
(April-Sept daily 9.30am-6.30pm; Oct-March Mon-Wed & Sat 9.30am-4.30pm, Thurs 9.30am-12.30pm, Sun 2-4.30pm; HS; 1.50), which now lies romantically ruined to the east. The abbey takes its unusual name from its founder, Devorgilla de Balliol, who carried the embalmed heart of her husband, around with her for the last 22 years of her life - her stone effigy, clutching a heart casket, can be seen in the south transept.
