Reached easily by road or rail from Oranienburg, the lakeside town of
NEURUPPIN
is the birthplace of the writer Theodor Fontane and the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It's a predominantly eighteenth-century town, whose historic centre is all the more appreciable for being slightly faded.
The town is laid out on a grid-like pattern around three large squares: a result of carefully planned reconstruction following a great fire in 1787. From the Hauptbahnhof access to the town is via Bahnhofstrasse, which leads into Schinkelstrasse and ends at the large square of
