Mesolngi
(Missolongi), for most visitors, is irrevocably associated with the name of
Lord Byron
, who died in the town, to dramatic effect, while organizer of the local Greek forces during the War of Independence. Mesolngi can claim some attention for this literary past but, as in Byron's time, it's a fairly shabby and rather unromantic place: wet during autumn and spring, and comprised mostly of drab, modern buildings. Amazingly, it, rather than larger Agrnio, is the capital of tolo-Akarnana, a decision surely taken more on sentimental than practical grounds.
