MAYEN
, some 30km from Andernach at the end of the Eifel rail line, was almost completely flattened by the RAF on January 2, 1945 to prevent the Germans from using it as a staging post for troops during the Ardennes offensive. However, the rebuilding programme was carried out with a great deal of sensitivity and, apart from an ugly department store on the Marktplatz, no great architectural errors seem to have been made.
All that remains of the once 1600-metre-long Stadtmauer are the gateways at either end:
