MARVEJOLS
lies at the southeast extremity of the Aubrac, on the main N9 road (the
autoroute
has not yet arrived) and the Paris-Bziers train line. The country changes drastically as you approach. The bare, granite-strewn plateau opens into a wide deep basin, wooded with pines and punctuated by the erosion-formed table-topped pinnacles known hereabouts as
trucs
. It is a small, undeveloped and unpretentious country town, whose ancient streets are contained within surviving medieval gates. There is little to do beyond savouring the atmosphere.
