Five miles southwest of Okehampton, the village of
LYDFORD
boasts the sturdy but small-scale Lydford Castle, a Saxon outpost, then a Norman keep and later used as a prison. The chief attraction here, though, is
Lydford Gorge
(April-Sept 10am-5.30pm; Oct 10am-4pm; Nov-March 10.30am-3pm; 3.60; NT), whose main entrance is a five-minute walk downhill.
