Ten kilometres north of Sounion, around the cape, is the port of
LVRIO
. This has two or three daily ferry connections with Ka, though extra high-speed services are supposed to be starting up. It can be reached by
bus
from the Mavromaton terminal in Athens, or from Sounion.
The port's ancient predecessor, Laurion, was famous for its silver mines - a mainstay of the classical Athenian economy - which were worked almost exclusively by slaves.
