Its mayor, Pierre Mauroy, was the first Socialist prime minister appointed by Mitterrand in 1981. Lille is a really good city for shopping. There are many good shops in the centre but a must to visit is Euralille which is a shopper's delight! Also make sure you visit the famous chocolate shop Meerts located in the old town. It's a dream!
