As befits its long-time status as a border town,
LANDSBERG
was equipped with a formidable
Stadtmauer
, of which the southern, eastern and western ranges still survive. The most impressive part, situated high above the town centre, is the fifteenth-century
Bayertor
(May-Sept daily 10am-noon & 2-5pm; DM2/?1), a mighty gateway consisting of an outer barbican and a 36-metre-high tower whose outer face is adorned with a monumental carving of the Crucifixion. On a clear day, the Alps can be seen from the top, though much of the Altstadt is out of view.
