An alternative east-coast base which seems the last place on Sfnos to fill up in season,
KSTRO
can be reached on foot from Apollona in 35 minutes, all but the last ten on a clear path beginning at the fork in the road to Kstro, threading its way via Kto Petli hamlet. Built on a rocky outcrop with an almost sheer drop to the sea on three sides, the ancient capital of the island retains much of its medieval character. Parts of its boundary walls survive, along with a full complement of sinuous, narrow streets graced by balconied, two-storey houses and some fine sixteenth- and seventeenth-century churches with ornamental floors.
