Founded by the seventeenth-century Turkish general Krdzhi Ali on the site of a much older settlement,
KRDZHALI
was one of the last towns to remain in Ottoman hands - old photos and paintings of the town depict a maze of lanes thronged with hawkers in fezzes, veils and pantaloons, mingling with Bulgarian peasants, brigands and Turkish officers. When it finally fell to the Bulgarian army in 1912, however, it had fewer than 3000 inhabitants, and only a trace of its erstwhile exoticism lingers in the bazaar quarter today.
