Extract from the Kom Ombo Travel Guides: Thirty kilometres downriver from Aswan, the arid hills of the Eastern Desert recede from the river banks and bumper crops of sugar cane are harvested on reclaimed land. Here, too, around the town of KOM OMBO , many of the Nubians displaced by Lake Nasser have settled. In ancient times this town stood at the crossroads of the caravan route from Nubia and trails from the gold mines of the Eastern Desert, becoming the capital of the Ombos nome and a training depot for war elephants during the Ptolemaic era.
