KAUB
, a few kilometres north of Bacharach on the opposite bank of the Rhine, was a stronghold of the Counts Palpatine, who in 1277 purchased
Burg Gutenfels
above the town, together with the right to levy tolls on passing ships. The castle as you see it today is a late nineteenth-century rebuild of the original, and nowadays functions as a hotel. Though you can't even enter the grounds unless you're a guest, it's worth following the footpath round the back, which leads to a vantage point offering a magnificent view over the Rhine.
