Thirteen kilometres west of Pyrgos,
KATKOLO
is somewhat more enticing: a decayed, ramshackle old port with good beaches close by. Until the last few decades, when new roads improved connections with Ptra, it controlled the trade for Ila province. Today only a few tramp steamers rust at anchor, though the navy calls occasionally and, oddly, the port remains a stop for Italian summer-cruise ships. Consequently, the town has become aware of a potentially lucrative tourist trade, and most of the old warehouses have been converted into boutiques and trinket shops.
