Thirteen kilometres west of Pyrgos,
KATKOLO
is somewhat more enticing: a decayed, ramshackle old port with good beaches close by. Until the last few decades, when new roads improved connections with Ptra, it controlled the trade for Ila province. Today only a few tramp steamers rust at anchor, though the navy calls occasionally and, oddly, the port remains a stop for Italian summer-cruise ships. Consequently, the town has become aware of a potentially lucrative tourist trade, and most of the old warehouses have been converted into boutiques and trinket shops. The main drag can be noisy at night, belying the town's torpid daytime appear...
