The northern towns and villages are accessible only to those with cars or sturdy motorbikes, and although there are guided coach tours from the resorts, none is really geared to tourism. Two kilometres inland from Alyks,
KATASTRI
is the largest settlement after the capital. Precisely because it's not geared towards tourism, it's the best place to see Zkynthian life as it's lived away from the usual racket. Its most impressive edifice is the huge rectangular church of Iperyia Theotkos, with a twin belfry and small new amphitheatre for festival performances.
