The main road west from Lama and Ipti, after scaling a spur of Mount Tymfrists, drops down to the town of
KARPENSSI
. An all-year tunnel below the snowline opened in 2000, but few people use it during summer as it means spending three claustrophobic kilometres underground. Karpenssi's site is spectacular - huddled at the base of the peak and head of the Karpenisitis valley, which extends south all the way to wall-like Mount Panetolik - but the town itself is entirely nondescript, having been destroyed in World War II by the Germans and again during the civil war.
