KARLVASSI
, 35km west of Vathy and the second town of Smos, is decidedly sleepier and more old-fashioned than the capital, despite having roughly the same population. Though lacking in distinction, it's popular as a base for exploring western Smos's excellent beaches and walking opportunities. The name, despite a vehement denial of Ottoman legacy elsewhere on Smos, appears to be a corruption of the Turkish for "snowy plain" - the plain in question being the conspicuous saddle of Mount Krkis overhead.
