From Mga Spilou a scenic road has been constructed 28km down to coastal Trpeza, and another has been hacked 10km through to
KALVRYTA
. The train line is more in harmony with the surroundings, but coming from Zakhloro the drama of the route is diminished as the gorge opens out. Kalvryta itself is beautifully positioned, with Mount Helms as a backdrop, though it has a sad atmosphere. During World War II, on December 13, 1943, the German occupiers carried out one of their most brutal reprisal massacres, killing the entire male population - 1436 men and boys - and leaving the town in flames, because of partisan activity in the area.
