JOAABA
, 462km west of Florianpolis, on the Peixe's west bank, directly across the river from the smaller town of Herval d'Oeste. Perhaps due to the narrowness of the valley, whose slopes rise precipitously along one entire side of town, Joaaba has an oppressive, almost menacing, atmosphere.
