HARBURG
. High above, dominating the valley of the River Wrnitz, is a huge

(guided tours: mid-March to Sept Tues-Sun 9am-5pm; Oct Tues-Sun 9.30am-4.30pm; DM5/?2.50), which was founded in the twelfth century by the Hohenstaufen emperors, before passing to the counts of Oettingen, whose descendants still own it. Never taken in battle, its fortifications and residential buildings - which date from a variety of periods - survive in pretty good condition.
