The small health resort of
ETTAL
, 4km down the road from Oberammergau, grew up around its Benedictine
Kloster
, which was founded in 1330 by Emperor Ludwig IV, and for several centuries wielded temporal (though not spiritual) jurisdiction over Oberammergau. A twelve-cornered design, based on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, was adopted for the original Gothic
