The first real point of any interest is the town of
ERCOLANO
, the modern offshoot of the ancient site of Herculaneum, which was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius on August 2, 79 AD. It's worth stopping here for two reasons: to see the excavations of the site and to climb to the summit of Vesuvius - to which buses run from outside the railway station. A word of warning, though: if you're planning to both visit Herculaneum and scale Vesuvius in one day (and it is possible), be sure to see Vesuvius first, and set off reasonably early - buses stop running up the mountain at lunchtime, leaving you the afternoon free to wander around th...
