At the onset of colonial times, Napoleon and the British in turn looted Egypt's treasures to fill their national museums, sparking off a trickle of Grand Tourists that, by the 1860s, had grown into a flood of travellers, packaged for their Nile cruises and Egyptological lectures by the enterprising Thomas Cook.

To Do And See : Dahab
For a chilled out couple of days go to Dahab in Sinai. It's on the way to St. Katherines Monastery and Mt. Sinai anyway. Plenty of hippies and everything that goes with that.

Dangers : Dress
"Modern" Egypt is definitely a third world country. People are poor and that makes them vulnerable to Islamic extremists, but yet you will find hospitality everywhere. Just keep in mind that you are in an Islamic country and choose your dress according to this, not to cause offence!

To Do And See : Things Not To Miss
Sail down the Nile River just as Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and all of the Pharaohs did. Sail on a Felucca ship to get the essence of Egypt the same as it was 3000 years ago. We must ride a camel around the Pyramids. Visit Old Cairo, especially the Khan-el-Khalili bazaar. This is where we can interact and bargain safely with the locals. Catch the light and sound show at the Pyramid at Karnak.

Culture : Some don'ts
The main religion is Islam, so women should dress modestly in public. Don't over-do public displays of affection. Don't ever pass food or eat with your left hand. Don't add salt to your food in an Egyptian home, it is considered insulting. Don't enter a mosque with your shoes on. Always remove your shoes outside the mosque. Don't enter a mosque during prayer times, and remember Friday is their holy day.
