Most traffic nowadays takes the upgraded A9 north from Inverness, bypassing the small market town of
DINGWALL
(from the Norse

, "parliament", and

, "field"), a royal burgh since 1226 and former port that was left high and dry when the river receded during the nineteenth century. Dingwall's only real claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of Macbeth, whose family occupied the now ruined castle on Castle Street. There's a small
