DHIDHYMTIHO
, 30km northeast of Soufl, is the last place on the trunk route into Turkey of any interest. The old part of town is still partially enclosed by the remains of double Byzantine fortifications, and some old houses and churches survive, but the area has a feeling of decay despite continuing efforts at restoration. Like Komotin, the town once had a fine synagogue for its thousand-strong Jewish community, but this was sold and demolished in 1985, after having been ransacked during World War II at the instigation of the Nazis, who had spread about the (false) rumour that treasure was secreted in its walls.
