Although Lao Bao is by far the most popular land crossing into Laos, it is also possible, though still tricky, to cross the border at
CAU TREO
, 105km west of the city of Vinh on Highway 8; the biggest hurdle is getting the exit point on your Vietnamese visa changed. There's a daily bus (6am) from Vinh bus station as far as Trung Tam (formerly known as Huong Son), the last settlement of any size before the border. From here you'll either have to pick up a motorbike taxi for the last 35km to Cau Treo or, better still, hitch a ride on a truck heading all the way to
Lak Xao
