Towards the northern end of Lough Derravaragh,
CASTLEPOLLARD
is the most convenient base from which to explore the whole area, handily placed right in the middle of all the attractions. It's not the most exciting of villages, although it clearly sets great store by its picturesqueness, with a vast triangular green surrounded by carefully tended eighteenth- and nineteenth-century dwellings.
